More About Markyia
Markyia joined the team at MDFF as the Administrative Assistant in August 2024.
From Markyia, in her own words: I was diagnosed with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy in 2017, I went through college as a full-time student with two jobs. I graduated from IUPUI in 2019, with a criminal justice degree. In 2019, I sprained my ankle and began using a cane before eventually using a walker. I am now primarily in a wheelchair. When I was diagnosed, I began hearing about MDFF. In 2023, I was picked to receive a van, and I was and still am so grateful. At first, I was involved with MDFF for help and resources. Once I found out that they were hiring, I knew that it was time that I got more involved to show my appreciation for everything that they have done, for myself and others.
I grew up the oldest of 3, although, I have 4 sisters on my dad’s side. It was always my mom, brother, sister and me. I have lived on my own for about 5 years now, in an apartment. I love reading, writing, cooking and eating. I enjoy cooking for other people, and I like to try new things as well. My passion is making others happy, I love being able to put a smile on someone’s face. Honestly, having muscular dystrophy inspires me and motivates me to be me. Dealing with this condition and the struggles that I must go through inspires me to do what I want, no matter the process.
I knew that I wanted to take on a bigger role with my involvement with MDFF and wanted to be part of the team. I wanted to be able to give some insight into a life with muscular dystrophy and provide enlightenment to any and everyone.
